Como parte de la revisión taxonómica del género para los proyectos de “Flora Argentina” y “Flora del Paraguay” se hallaron siete nombres que necesitan estudios nomenclaturales. Como resultado se designan cinco lectotipos y dos neotipos y se incluyen notas sobre las tipificaciones.

Abstract A comprehensive study on the fruit anatomy and development of Cordiera concolor was carried out to establish the origin of the gelatinous tissue surrounding the seeds at maturity. Cordiera currently belongs to tribe Cordiereae, forming part of the species-rich lineage called Gardenieae complex. Most genera of Gardenieae complex has many-seeded fleshy fruits, with seeds usually imbedded in a pulp, which historically was considered of a placental nature. For the histological analyses, fruits at different stages of development were fixed in formalin-acetic acid-alcohol and examined with light microscopy. The endocarp has no woody consistency, it is what classifies a fruit as berry. The pericarp is differentiated into three histological zones: 1) the exocarp, formed of the epidermis and the sub-epidermal tannin cells, 2) the mesocarp, consisting of parenchyma with tannins and druses, and 3) the endocarp, derived from the internal epidermis of the ovary. The placental tissue has little development during the formation of the pericarp. We concluded that the gelatinous tissue surrounding the seeds in the ripe fruit is formed of the mesocarp and endocarp. The present results disagree with the widely accepted conception of the placental origin of the gelatinous pulp surrounding the seeds in Gardenieae Complex species.

Abstract we conducted anatomical analysis of anthers with the aim to establish the differences in the development pattern of microsporophytes and microgametophytes between perfect and imperfect flowers in the tribe Gardenieae (Rubiaceae). The species studied were: Tocoyena formosa (monoecious with perfect flowers), Cordiera concolor, Genipa americana, Randia calycina, and Randia heteromera (dioecious with imperfect flowers). Flowers in successive stages of development were collected and fixed. The material was processed and examined using light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The present study revealed the stage when pollen is arrested in the functionally pistillate flowers of the dioecious taxa. Based on these observations an evolutionary sequence of changes towards the reduction of non-functional anthers in Rubiaceae is proposed. In addition, we describe and discuss characters that might be of importance in future phylogenetic studies in Rubiaceae (e.g., pollen morphology and its dispersal unit, the presence of orbicules, and a new type of placentoid).

Abstract Water shortage is one of the main agricultural issues and alternative techniques are necessary to reduce its consumption. During the cut flowers post-harvest management, the excessive use of clean tap water is common after harvest, during the selection-packing process and during transportation to avoid dehydration of the flower stems. The studies about the benefits from this repeated hydration practice are scarce. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the management with water (wet) and without it (dry) after harvest (phase I), during cold storage (phase II) and the vase life of rose cultivars (Rosa hybrida) Blush, Freedom and Topaz cultivars which have commercial importance. We hypothesized that the effects of the dry management of the rose stems modify the life in vase regard their cultivar. During phase I, a batch of cut flowers was kept in dry conditions and another placed in containers with clean tap water. At phase II (the stems remained at 1±1 °C and 85 % RH for 7 d) each batch divided in two and kept in a dry and wet condition. Then, vase life was evaluated on the stems at room temperature (20±3 °C and 56 % RH). The evaluated variables were the fresh biomass of the floral stem, floral opening, opening of the stomata pores, colony forming units (CFU, bacteria) and the incidence of Botrytis sp. The experimental design was completely randomized, with 12 treatments consisting of three cultivars and four management combinations each; the experimental unit was a floral stem from which ten were included per treatment. The management differences during phase II had a greater effect than in phase I. The three cultivars had similar reactions to both types of management during phase I, but dry handling during phase II significantly increased vase life. The effect of wet or dry management in phase I and II, in the vase life of rose stems, is partially dependent on the cultivar.

Resumen La escasez de agua es uno de los problemas principales en la agricultura y técnicas alternativas son necesarias para reducir el consumo. Durante el manejo postcosecha de flores de corte el uso excesivo de agua potable es común después de la cosecha, durante la selección-empaque y durante el transporte para evitar la deshidratación de los tallos florales. Los estudios de los beneficios de esta práctica de hidratación reiterada son escasos. El objetivo de este estudio fue evaluar el efecto del manejo con agua (húmedo) y sin ella (seco) después de la cosecha (fase I) y durante el almacenamiento refrigerado (fase II) en la vida de florero de los cultivares de rosa (Rosa hybrida) Blush, Freedom y Topaz, con importancia comercial. La hipótesis fue que el efecto del manejo seco de los tallos de rosa modifica la vida en florero en dependencia del cultivar. En la fase I un lote de flores de corte se mantuvo en condición seca y otro se colocó en contenedores con agua potable. En la fase II (los tallos permanecieron a 1±1 °C y HR 85 % por 7 d) cada lote se dividió en dos y se mantuvieron en condición seca y húmeda. Luego, la vida en florero se evaluó en los tallos a temperatura ambiente (20±3 °C y 56 % HR). Las variables evaluadas fueron biomasa fresca del tallo floral, apertura floral, apertura del poro estomático, unidades formadoras de colonias (UFC; bacterias) e incidencia de Botrytis sp. El diseño experimental fue completamente al azar, con 12 tratamientos formados por tres cultivares y cuatro combinaciones de manejo; la unidad experimental fue un tallo floral y se incluyeron diez por tratamiento. El tipo de manejo durante la fase II tuvo efecto mayor que en la fase I. La reacción de los tres cultivares fue similar a ambos tipos de manejo durante la fase I, pero el manejo seco durante la fase II aumentó significativamente la vida en florero. El efecto del manejo húmedo o seco en la fase I y II, en la vida en florero de tallos de rosa, es parcialmente dependiente del cultivar.

A revision of the Argentinian species of Randia is presented. According to this study, three species are recognized: R. ferox, R. micracantha and R. calycina, the latter being a new record for the country. It is here proposed exclude Randia armata from the country, a species that is widely and erroneously cited for the area. Taxonomic aspects, vegetative anatomy and pollen morphology of the three species are analyzed. All taxa are described and differentiated through a dichotomous key. Images of diagnostic characters, a distribution map, and ecological observations are included. Lectotypes for the taxon names Basanacantha, R. calycina and R. ferox are proposed. It is proposed to Randia micracantha var. glabra is treated as a new synonym for Randia micracantha. It was determined that certain anatomic and pollen characters are useful for differentiating the species occurring in Argentina.

Se presenta una revisión de las especies argentinas de Randia. A partir de este estudio se reconocen tres especies: R. ferox, R. micracantha y R. calycina, siendo ésta última una nueva cita para el país. Se propone excluir del país a R. armata, especie amplia y erróneamente citada para el área. Se analizaron aspectos taxonómicos, la anatomía vegetativa y morfología polínica de las tres especies. Todos los taxones son descritos y diferenciados a través de una clave dicotómica. Se incluyen además imágenes de los caracteres diagnósticos de las especies, mapa de distribución y observaciones ecológicas. Se proponen lectotipos para los nombres de los taxones Basanacantha, R. calycina y R. ferox. Randia micracantha var. glabra es tratada como un nuevo sinónimo de Randia micracantha. Se determinó que algunos caracteres anatómicos y polínicos son útiles para la diferenciación de las especies argentinas.

Leptocybe invasa is a gall-inducing wasp that oviposits in the young eucalyptus leaves. The plant responds by forming a gall. As a result, this not only causes rolling leaves and defoliation, but also collapses the tree buds which affect seriously the eucalyptus production. In this paper, it is analyzed the morphogenetic and anatomical changes that are caused by the development of galls and then it is compared with healthy plants. The Eucalyptus grandis and Eucalyptus camaldulensis are cultivated in Corrientes, Argentina, and have been studied with traditional techniques of optical and scanning electron microscopy. The wasp oviposits among the vascular bundles, and the plant produces an hyperplastic tissue that are differed into four layers: nutrient, tanniniferous, sclerotic, and crystalliferous. The circulation of the vascular tissues is obstructed and consequently it is interrupted the normal flow of water and solutes that are transported in the xylem. Hence, this situation produces circular vessel. In fact, it is not only analyzed the morphological and anatomical changes but also the insect development, and this cycle is divided into three stages. This work demonstrates that the formation of galls in the eucalyptus are an excellent example of extended phenotype, where the action of L.invasa induces the abnormal growth of plant tissues because of the increase the number of cells, the collapse of the vascular system of the affected area and the apparition of new anatomical features.

Leptocybe invasa o “avispa de la agalla del eucalipto”, es un microhimenóptero gallícola que ovipone en hojas jóvenes de eucaliptos. La planta responde formando agallas, que causan enrollamiento, defoliación y colapso de brotes, afectando seriamente la producción. En este trabajo se analizan los cambios morfogenéticos y anatómicos provocados por el desarrollo de las agallas, comparándolos con plantas sanas. Con técnicas tradicionales de microscopía óptica y electrónica de barrido se estudiaron ejemplares de Eucalyptus grandis y E. camaldulensis, cultivados en Corrientes, Argentina. La avispa ovipone entre los haces vasculares, el vegetal produce un tejido hiperplásico que se diferencia en cuatro estratos: nutricio, esclerosado, tanífero y cristalífero. El recorrido de los tejidos vasculares se obstruye, produciéndose “bucles xilemáticos” que interrumpen el flujo normal de agua y fotosintatos. Analizando los cambios morfológicos y anatómicos, junto al desarrollo del insecto, se divide el ciclo en tres etapas. Este trabajo demuestra que la formación de agallas en Eucalyptus representa un excelente ejemplo de fenotipo extendido, donde la acción de L. invasa induce al crecimiento anormal de los tejidos vegetales, tanto en aumento del número de células, colapso del sistema vascular de la zona afectada y aparición de nuevas características anatómicas.

Indument, extraforal nectaries and foliar anatomy in Bignoniaceae from Argentine. A comparative anatomical study was undertaken on the leaves of 50 Argentinean Bignoniaceae species in order to investigate anatomical variations which may be useful in species identifcation and to evaluate their signifcance in the taxonomy of the family. Leaves were analyzed on surface view and in serial sections, cross and paradermal, using optical and scanning electron microscopy. Among the features that stand out for their diagnostic value are: position and anatomical structure of the extraforal nectaries, trichome complement, number of layers of epidermis, mesophyll type and composition of leaf margin. These characteristic, alone or in combination may be useful in species identifcation. The results provide a comprehensive leaf anatomical character-set typical for the family.

La presente contribución comprende el estudio comparativo de la anatomía foliar de 50 especies de Bignoniaceae que crecen en Argentina. El objetivo es analizar las variaciones anatómicas a fn de contribuir en la identifcación de las especies y evaluar los caracteres en la taxonomía de la familia. Las hojas fueron estudiadas en vista superfcial y en cortes seriados, transversales y paradermales, por medio de microscopía óptica y electrónica de barrido. Entre las características que se destacan por su valor diagnóstico se describen: posición y estructura anatómica de los nectarios extraforales, complemento tricomático, número de capas de la epidermis, tipo de mesóflo y la composición del margen de la hoja. Estas características, solas o en combinación pueden ser útiles en la identifcación de especies. Los resultados proporcionan un juego completo de caracteres foliares típicos de la familia.

Se estudió la anatomía y desarrollo de la flor estaminada, microsporogénesis y microgametogénesis de Lophophytum leandrii y Lophophytum mirabile subsp. bolivianum, a fin de aportar datos para el conocimiento y taxonomía del género. Las flores estaminadas se diferencian en número y ubicación de las piezas del perianto y en la forma de las anteras, siendo caracteres taxonómicos importantes. Las piezas periánticas están constituidas de parénquima fundamental cubiertas por una epidermis uniestratificada. La pared de la antera consta de epidermis, endotecio pluriestratificado (de doble origen), capa media y tapete tipo secretor uniestratificado (de origen dual). Las tétradas de microsporas son de tipo tetraédricas, los granos de polen son tricolpados, sincolpados con exina delgada, siendo liberados en estado bicelular. Las reducciones que caracterizan el túber también se presentan en las flores estaminadas, donde aparecen "piezas periánticas" que no presentan estructura típica de sépalos o pétalos. A pesar que estas holoparásitas se caracterizan por poseer cuerpo vegetativo aberrante, carente de órganos o meristemas típicos, los procesos de microsporogénesis y microgametogénesis se desarrollan de forma normal.

Plants have mutualistic relationships with insects in two ways: through domatia provide housing of predators, and extrafloral nectaries secreting nectar and provide food in exchange for control of herbivores or fungal pathogens. The foliar anatomy of 52 species of Bignoniaceae was examined by light and scanning electron microscopy, in order to describe the different types of domatia and extrafloral nectaries. Two types of domatia were observed: small hair-tufts and pockets; the presence and type of domatia represents important taxonomic characters in Bignoniaceae. Extrafloral nectaries are found in all studied species. They are located in different positions: along the midvein, associated with domatia, or grouped in glandular fields, either in leaf or interpetiolar. The Bignoniaceae have simultaneously domatia and extrafloral nectaries on their leaves, these features are described as plant components in a probable mechanism of indirect defense.

Las plantas presentan relaciones mutualísticas con insectos a cambio del control de sus herbívoros u hongos patógenos; por medio de los domacios les ofrecen albergue y mediante la secreción de néctar de nectarios extraflorales les brindan alimento. Se examinó la anatomía foliar en 52 especies de Bignoniaceae con microscopía óptica y electrónica de barrido, con el objetivo de describir los domacios y los nectarios extraflorales. Los domacios presentes son de dos tipos: mechones de pelos y bolsillos, siendo un carácter taxonómico útil en varias especies. Los nectarios extraflorales se encuentran en todas las especies, ubicándose en diversas posiciones: a lo largo de la vena media, asociados a los domacios o agrupados en campos glandulares, que pueden ser foliares o interpeciolares. Las Bignoniaceae presentan simultáneamente domacios y nectarios extraflorales en sus hojas, los cuales se describen como componentes vegetales de un probable mecanismo de defensa indirecta.

This contribution provides new information on the association of weevils of the genus Oxycorynus Chevrolat (Belidae: Oxycoryninae) with parasitic plants of the genus Lophophytum Schott & Endl. (Balanophoraceae). New distribution records of Oxycorynus in Argentina are provided.

Se brinda nueva información sobre la asociación de gorgojos del género Oxycorynus Chevrolat (Belidae: Oxycoryninae) con plantas parásitas del género Lophophytum Schott & Endl. (Balanophoraceae). Se proveen, además, nuevos registros de distribución de Oxycorynus en Argentina.
